Marc Nadjiwan, a young Native Canadian who just happens to be a member of the Ojibway Tribe, has released his second full-length CD Awake, which showcases a talent that places him comfortably alongside such notable singer-songwriters as Stephen Fearing and Buffy Sainte-Marie. The first track, "Noweenagun," blows up into a cacophony of world beat rhythms and Native Indian sounds and energy. The rest of the album includes smatterings of these sounds, but an alternative rock record this is not. Stuck on an acoustic, world beat vibe, Nadjiwan's method of passing on the messages in his songs is forceful and convincing. It also doesn't hurt to include such guest musicians as Andy Stochansky (Ani DiFranco), Maury Lafoy (Starling, The Supers) and Arlene Bishop to add their shine on this rather strong offering.
