reviews

"Award winning Canadian musician Kevin Hearn is releasing his new solo album ‘Calm And Cents’. As a current member of The Barenaked Ladies - the rock band which has sold 15 million records and recorded, among other things, the theme of the hit sitcom The Big Bang Theory – and fronts his own group, Kevin Hearn and Thin Buckle and was a former member of the Rheostatics, Kevin is a creative tour de force. He is a veteran of the Canadian Music pantheon and has always been involved with many ongoing music projects and has a constant barrage of creative energy that he admits is “both a blessing and a curse”.

So it makes sense that now he has returned with the release of a solo collection of alternative/ experimental masterpieces. Whether its an audible deep dive into the creative mind of a Canadian music great, or a melodic commentary on the current environmental and political state of affairs in his home of Southern Ontario, this record offers a lot to digest and cordially invites you to do so.

Kevin who successfully beat blood cancer 15 years ago, has released more than twenty full-length albums to date. This kind of relentless inspiration and creativity is not something you can artificially manufacture, but some simple methods can create a supportive environment for it. And he says it’s the Transcendental Meditation practice which helps him keep things running smoothly and has discovered that eliminating distractions and fostering peaceful relaxation is the key. All influences key in his new album which is stripped down chilled out Electronica.

Hearn currently lives in downtown Toronto. He also has an isolated cottage on a lake where his family spent time when he was a child. When heading into writing mode, Hearn always carries a book in which he jots down passing thoughts as he wanders through the city. Hearn then retreats to the cottage to sift through his many musical mementos and see “what sticks to the wall.”
