reviews
"Cullen’s new album is an equally-intriguing exploration of “the longing, love and painful truths of coming into motherhood.” In her biography, Cullen describes the “intimate journey of motherhood; of her longing to be a mother, the loss of failed pregnancies, the pain of a stillbirth, the birth of her son and the joy and love motherhood now brings.” The ten original songs on this record follow that journey in thoughtful song.
Go Climb is an optimistic opener that feels daring and hopeful. It’s All Love was co-written by Cullen’s friend and national treasure Ron Sexsmith, with warm vocal harmony by Thom Gill.
Light Is Up is about the miracle of birth and the calm release of embracing new life. The music is gentle and the delicate layers of guitar enrobe the vocal like the strands of a light, hand-knit blanket.
Be Here Now deals with the broken heart of loss, with comforting vocals by Thom Gill. Across the Water is poignant and gut-wrenching as a mother loses her child.
Hard Run features Michelle Willis (David Crosby Band, Snarky Puppy) in one of the best songs on the record.
Other highlights include Could be Good, Get What You Like, and Interrupted Time. Sit down with good headphones and take this sonic journey. Rich rewards await."
"Canadian songwriter Lori Cullen delivers ten original contemporary folk songs with a pure, unaffected style.
BLOOD WONDER tells the story of Lori’s intimate journey of motherhood. Of her longing to be a mother, the loss of failed pregnancies, the pain of a stillbirth, the birth of her son and the joy that motherhood now brings. The optimistic and hopeful songs were composed with Lori’s guitar and voice and include two co-writes with friends Ron Sexsmith and Jennifer Foster.
Co-produced by her dear friend Chris Gartner, it features lush strings by Grammy-nominated arranger Drew Jurecka and additional vocals by Michelle Willis and Thom Gill.
Unforced, unfiltered and exceptionally intimate, Lori Cullen’s aerial voice has been called “one of the purest of a generation”. She is a searingly direct and authentically driven artist and in her eight albums she’s taken chances every time. Lori’s career began in the late 90’s in Toronto’s singer/songwriter circuit where she effortlessly cultivated a loyal fan base with her unique hybrid of folk, pop and jazz. She is known for her songwriting and unique song interpretations across genres and has been identified as one of the luminary jazz giant Kurt Elling’s “new favourite singers.”
